Spring Staycation Guide: A Portland Weekend Agenda
Spring is one of my favorite seasons in Portland. It’s not just because of the flowing trees and first feeling of sun on my face after a long cold winter (although that stuff is not too shabby either!). Spring just feels like this time of excitement and opportunity – it’s a fresh start.
We’re all defrosting from winter, the real estate market is picking up in a big way, and you can just feel the energy as people start to daydream about summer fun. But here’s the thing: you don’t have to wait for that big trip or new destination to have those vacation vibes. Sometimes all it takes is a little intention and a free weekend to experience the city you live in a little differently.
Portland is so good at slow mornings, wandering afternoons, and cozy dinners. So if your summer vacay can’t come soon enough, here’s a simple, low-pressure staycation agenda – built around some sweet local spots, small businesses, and classic Portland energy.
Friday Evening: Ease into Vacation Mode
The key to a good staycation is allowing yourself a nice transition period from the busy work week to the relaxed weekend vibes.
Close your laptop, mute your email notifications, and head somewhere that feels easy and simple. If you’re up for a little movement, a walk along Alberta is always a good call. There’s just something about that area – the cutie local shops, the amazing food, the colorful houses – that always gets me out of my head.
If you time it right, you can catch some live music or even a market on the main strip. And one of the best parts of Alberta is all of the incredible food – check out Radio room for a cozy atmosphere and great music, Bamboo Sushi for something a little nicer, or one of the amazing food truck pods if casual is your vibe. Bonus points if you treat yourself to some ice cream from Salt & Straw, their seasonal flavors are always incredible!
This day isn’t about doing the most – it’s about giving your brain a reset, and doing enough to feel like your weekend has officially started.
Saturday: Wandering and Exploring
Saturday is your day to have fun, however that looks for you. Do you love museums but haven’t checked out some of our local spots? Do that! Do you love antique stores but never find the time to go? Antique store marathon! Is there a neighborhood you’ve been dying to check out, or a dog park you’ve heard great things about? Now’s your chance!
My suggestion is to pick one or two big activities, and wander from there. You could start with one of our amazing Farmer’s Markets (the Montavilla one is my favorite!) – grab a pastry, maybe even pick up a few things that look good – then check out what else is in the area that catches your eye – perhaps a record store, vintage shop, or even a local park to lounge in.
From there, you could get your body moving – maybe a relaxing bike ride down Springwater Corridor that puts you right into Sellwood. As one of the cutest spots in Portland, Sellwood has major staycation vibes, and is truly so fun to walk around. You could get lost there for a few hours (at least) exploring their countless antique stores and local shops. And if you’re around long enough to make it to dinner, check out Jade Tea House, PDX Sliders, or Monty’s Red Sauce for some great eats.
For an evening activity, Lauretta Jean’s is a personal favorite for dessert! They’ve got great pies, an adorable atmosphere, and it’s an all-around good time.
Wherever the day takes you is good – there is no wrong way to staycation, as long as you are enjoying yourself and feeling present in the moment, you’re doing great.
Sunday: Slow it Down
Sunday is for slowing down, and taking it all in. No Sunday scaries here!
If you want a true “treat yourself” morning, head over to McMenamins Kennedy school – it’s one of those places that feels like a special experience without costing too much or trying too hard. I love to grab breakfast at their restaurant – they have the most insane crusted french toast – and then relax in their soaking pool. If a spa vibe is more your speed and you’re willing to spend a bit more, Root Whole Body has an incredible list of services for the full relaxation experience.
As an alternative, you could spend some time with your hobbies – maybe exploring a new book store, trying a new craft, or learning a new skill like furniture upcycling. If you picked up food from the farmer's market, you could cook yourself a nice meal, and enjoy a slow evening.
This day is all about slowing down, settling in, and enjoying the peace. There’s no rush, no agenda, and plenty of time for you to do what feeds your soul.
Final Thoughts
One of the best parts about Portland is how much there is to do here. A lot of us get caught in the day-to-day of working and adulting, it can be hard to carve out time to be present and enjoy everything this city has to offer.
When Spring comes along, it can be tempting to start daydreaming about warmer days and vacation plans, but it can still feel so far off. If you’ve been feeling a little restless, or just in need of a reset, this is your sign to take a weekend, stay local, and find some intentional time to relax and enjoy all this amazing city has to offer.
