Portland Guide: Best Neighborhoods to Spend Your Spring
Spring has sprung y’all, and we all need a little extra joy in our lives these days. I don’t know about you, but I am so ready to break out of the house, feel the sunshine on my face (whenever it decides to shine), and stop and smell the flowers.
I know the rainy days aren’t totally behind us yet – it’s only spring, afterall, but I’m eager to soak up every sunny day this month has to offer. There’s nothing better than seeing the season changing, and flowers blooming, to remind us that there are great days coming and there are warm days ahead.
If you’ve been looking for an opportunity to get out and explore the city when the wet weather lets up, you’ve made your way to the right place! In this blog post, I’ll share some of my favorite neighborhoods to enjoy the absolute beauty that is spring in the PNW. So grab a friend, your family, or even your pup, and get ready to enjoy the sights of spring!
Cherry Blossoms at Tom McCall Waterfront Park
Starting with a classic Portland experience – the cherry blossoms on the waterfront in downtown Portland. If you haven’t made it out for this yet, you’re in for an absolute treat.
Every March a row of about 100 cherry trees bloom along the Willamette River creating a beautiful spring scene, but they only last a few short weeks so be sure to plan accordingly. It can get super busy in the area, but honestly, it’s worth it! My hot tip is to make a morning out of it – get up a little early, grab your favorite beverage on the way, and take a slow walk along the river before the crowds show up.
Bonus: if you make it out there on March 7th, you’ll time your visit with Portland’s first Saturday Market of 2026! Enjoy art and eats from great local vendors as you stroll around the area.
Lan Su Chinese Garden
If you’re looking for true spring tranquility, definitely hit up the Lan Su Chinese Garden – it’s a gem. Even though it’s tucked right in the heart of the city, it feels like a peaceful escape from the outside world. You can check out the blooms while walking winding pathways, going over stone bridges, and hanging out by the koi ponds. I love grabbing a cup of tea at their tea house, and just enjoying the vibes with a good book.
Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden
Located between Reed College and the Eastmoreland neighborhood, Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden packs a spring bunch with some seriously bright blooms. The garden is about nine acres and includes more than 2,500 rhododendrons, azaleas, and other flowering plants.
Rhododendrons typically bloom around late April and early May, so while they aren’t quite ready for us yet, it’s definitely something to look forward to. If you’re looking to make a day out of it, Reed’s campus is also beautiful this time of year, and you can also check out some great coffee shops in the Woodstock and Sellwood areas just a few minutes from the gardens.
Spring Views at Mt. Tabor Park
Mt. Tabor Park is an absolute Portland staple, and for a good reason! The views are truly breathtaking year round, and spring is no different. With winding trails up to the top, you’ll get beautiful views of the city experiencing spring, but from a whole new vantage point.
The park is usually bustling with people and pups, which brings a great energy to those sunny spring days. I love to grab takeout from one of my favorite food spots in the area, bring a blanket, and have a picnic at the top while taking in the views and people/pup-watching.
Picnics at Cathedral Park
Speaking of park picnics, Cathedral Parks is one of my favorite places to sit, snack, and take in the spring surroundings. The park sits directly beneath St. Johns bridge, and is easily one of the most beautiful spots in Portland.
The park includes a large grassy lawn for relaxing, as well as plenty of trees, plants, and trails to enjoy. Located right on the newly renovated waterfront, you might catch people paddleboarding and swimming on those warmer days.
The St. Johns neighborhood offers a ton of great spots to grab a snack or a drink and wander through cute local shops to make your outing complete.
Final Thoughts
One of the best things about Portland is the way we get to experience the seasons. It always helps me to slow down, appreciate this city, and enjoy days out with my people.
Whether you’re looking for an early morning stroll amongst the cherry blossoms, love the bright colors of the blooming rhododendrons, enjoy a peaceful tea at the Chinese Gardens, or want to experience a picnic with a view at one of our wonderful parks, this city has something for you.
And honestly, one of the best ways to experience Portland is by simply exploring it. If you have a favorite spot around this city to catch some spring sights, I’m always looking to add new ones to my list!
